1. Who are we?
The company was founded in 2010 by our head web geek Car Westerman and our consultant psychologist published author geek Sian Morgan who specialises in designing online resources. Although the company itself is new, we’ve actually worked together brilliantly for years on various successful commercial projects that had to impress people at BT, John Lewis, Goldman Sachs etc. For larger or more specialised projects we contract in any extra people we need for the duration of that project, which is much more cost effective for you as a client.
2. Why did we become a Community Interest Company (CIC)?
We started the company because as well as enjoying working together - we wanted to put our skills to better use by concentrating on building websites and web resources that we’re really passionate about and which will use the web to make a real difference. So in 2010 we took the plunge, formed Webs for Wellbeing, applied for CIC status and here we are, trying to use the web to do something useful and make a positive difference in some way.
3. What do we do?
Basically we do 2 things. Firstly we research, pilot and develop our own in-house web-based resources (projects of our choosing which we fund or find funding for) which we think will make people feel happier, healthier and/or more successful in some way. Secondly, where possible, we offer our services and build websites and resources at not-for-profit prices for other people, like you maybe, if we think that will help the community or a group of people in some way too. If you click the ‘do you qualify’ button you can get an idea of who we offer services to at a not for profit price.
4. What web services do we offer people at not for profit prices?
We love creating innovative interactive stuff. We also build the usual microsites, websites and CDROMs with logos, bespoke graphics, emails, contact forms, online questionnaires, all the basic SEO stuff, videos, image galleries, ecommerce and flash animations. We can use social media like twitter or flickr to help you save money. We can host for you or transfer your site to whoever you like once it’s built. Basically, tell us what you want, we’ll take care of it and anything we need you to do we’ll ask for in systematic small bite-sized chunks.
5. What is a CIC?
Community Interest Companies (CICS) must trade for a social purpose and want to conduct business for community benefit, and not purely for private advantage. Registration of a company as a CIC has to be approved by the Regulator who makes sure we comply with legal obligations, pass a "community interest test" and are "asset locked" which ensures that the company is established for community purposes and our assets are dedicated to these purposes. If you would like to know more about CICs Google ‘CIC regulator’ and you’ll see the official regulators site plus lots more info.
6. Where are we?
Core team members live in Kent but we operate a virtual office and have been used to working this way for years. It means we can (and have) worked with people all over the UK, Europe and as far as South Africa. Having a virtual office means you simply pay us for the work we do not for fancy offices! It also means team members can work flexible hours so that they can do school runs AND work instead of feeling frazzled and torn between family and work every day. And we can contract in additional team members & specialists for any project no matter where they live.
7. What sort of projects do we do in house?
At the moment we’re in the middle of developing a resource to help children deal with and transform the effects of bullying and one to help children feel better about their bodies - but we have a huge list of things we’d love to build so we’re just systematically working our way through it!
8. Why do we create stuff at not for profit prices?
Do you think we should spend money on large bonuses for directors and swanky office furniture (the cost of which we have to pass on somewhere) or on more features on a website to help children who have been abused? The question should be how could we NOT be not-for-profit! We think the websites and resources we want to create will be so much better if all the money is spent on the project. It means we give maximum value for money on absolutely everything we create and it means money gets spent on the right things.
9. Why do we focus on certain areas?
It makes us so sad to see a fantastic website for an insurance company and a less than fantastic one for adults who have been abused as children. It doesn’t make sense to us to use our skills to sell fizzy drinks for commercial gain only when we could be using the same skills to inspire children to learn or heal after a traumatic event, or to help fantastic start ups who are struggling in a precarious economic climate, or help a project bring a community together or help an organisation raise awareness or money for something really worthwhile (selling fizzy drinks to raise money is a different matter!).
10. What else do you want to know?
We can't think of anything else to put on this egg - if there's anything else you'd like to know just contact us. We'd love to hear from you so go on, press the contact button - if you can't think of anything you'd like to ask just send us a joke and we'll send you one back!
